Board of Directors Position Description

Organizational Description:

Somos Seattle is born out of the need to build space for LGBTQ Latinx chosen family, culture, and resilience. Somos is an organization serving LGBTQ Latinx folks. Our goal is to build an active community, share resources, and foster spaces for learning & growth.

Somos hosts quarterly events to foster community space such as Joteria, Queer Brunch, as well as our annual Seattle Latinx Pride and Pride Reception at Columbia Tower. In addition to creating space, Somos embarks on initiatives that aim to share resources and foster space for learning and growth such as Queer the Census, WA COVID19 Immigrant Relief Fund, and more.

Position Summary:

Somos is governed by 7-9 members of our Board of Directors, which are tasked to organize and support events, oversee annual budgets and expenses, establish organizational strategy & goals, oversee programs and metrics of success, as well as design scopes of work for volunteers, contractors, and staff. 

Length of Term & Commitment: 

  • 1 year with the option to renew for a second term automatically. 

  • Attend two-hour monthly Board meetings. 

Responsibilities of The Board of Directors:

  1. Meeting the fundraising goals for the organization.

  2. Selecting and evaluating the performance of the staff, contractors, and volunteers.

  3. Develop the strategic and organizational plan.

  4. Ensure strong fiduciary oversight and financial management in partnership with the fiscal sponsor Rainier Valley Corps.

  5. Approving, organizing, and monitoring the organization’s programs and services.

  6. Enhancing the organization's public image and fostering partnerships. 

  7. Determining the vision, mission, and purposes of the organization.

  8. Assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization.

Responsibilities of Individual Board Members:

Each individual board member is expected to:

  • Know the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs.

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements.

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission.

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve the organization’s mission.

  • Give a meaningful personal financial donation.

  • Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing and can influence public policy.

  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings & retreats.

  • Participate fully in one or more committees.

Other Board of Director Duties:

  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.

  • Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.

Qualifications include:

  • Must have strong interpersonal communication habits.

  • Skilled in google-docs for collaborative assignments.

  • Have access to a computer or phone to join virtual meetings.

  • LGBTQ & Latinx experiences and cultural knowledge.

Somos Seattle Signature Events 2022:

  • Pride Reception at Columbia Tower - Friday, 6/10/2022

  • Seattle Latinx Pride -  El Centro de La Raza - Saturday, 7/16/2022

Compensation: Volunteer Position, 10 - 20 hours a month, access to all events for free, retreat expenses paid by Somos, ambassador opportunities paid by Somos

  • 2/9 - 2/11 Review Board Applications 

  • 2/17/2022 Board Virtual Interviews

  • 2/18/2022 Board Final Decision & Position Offers

  • 2/21/2022 Board Member Acceptance

  • 2/22/2022 Official Announcement + Somos Seattle Board of Directors Reception Event

  • 1/7/2023 Review of Somos Board for the year 2023
